In this case—the Select2 library—it ensures that you don't have to do the work of handling the hundreds of edge cases, styling inconsistencies between browsers, and accessibility. Regarding the last one, think keyboard navigability, screen reader compatibility, etc. Here's a GitHub issue thread that spans five years of work to make it more accessible.
