    1) Review Heatmap. This add-on is very popular for tracking your progress, and chances are you've heard about it already considering how many people post their streaks.

  • Experiment with Gamification Elements
    2 projects | /r/Anki | 15 Mar 2023
I don't usually actively search for gamification add-ons for Anki, but I think some extensions I use currently express some aspect of gamification: 1. Review Heatmap visually shows the amount of days where you reviewed & didn't review Anki. It serves as a progress bar and motivator to continue to do daily reviews. However, I don't know how long you plan to run your experiment for: if it's only for a few days then it may not be a very strong motivator. 2. Speed Focus Mode caps the amount of time you can spend recalling a card to a user-specified amount, and auto-flips the card after the time limit. This add-on significantly changes the way that I review Anki. When using this add-on, I find myself being more willing to accept that I forgot something, as I'm motivated by the timer to just put out an answer by the time limit, even if said answer is wrong. When using this addon, you may have challenges knowing what time limit to set on the cards, however, depending on how complex the cards are. I usually have to spend much more time on my japanese cards than english vocabulary cards, for example, to recall something.
  • how do people set up the square progress boxes at the bottom?
    2 projects | /r/medicalschoolanki | 15 Jan 2023
The 'progress boxes' are known as a 'review heatmap': this is the add-on to use. This is very popular among Anki users.

A possible downside, besides the aforementioned setup, is that it's a bit more of a "serious" app I guess, and it's not particularly gamified beyond just the basic SRS. But with certain addons, that too can be improved. I recommend Review Heatmap to keep you going, Leaderboard if you get motivated by competition, and Auto Ease Factor to avoid ending up in what users call "ease hell".

The new versions definitely pack a lot of cool functionality! As far as Review Heatmap is concerned: You should be in the clear. The add-on is fully compatible with 2.1.50+ nowadays. Just make sure to grab the latest version from AnkiWeb.
