    This one has a very simple fix. If some proprietary patented technology can reduce the number of decoys in Monero by say 20% from 10 to 8, then increasing the number of decoys from say 10 to 20 would deal with the problem. The number of decoys after both the attack and the defense would increase from 10 to 16. Of course since the patented technology is proprietary one many not know what the percentage reduction in the number of decoys is. The prudent course of action then is to increase the number of decoys as much as it is feasible as soon as possible. There is a conversation on GitHub on this very topic.

    The choice is pretty arbitrary and changing it has been a difficult discussion so far every time it came up. It will change again this year, and there is an open discussion here: on what the chosen value should be. And yes, the tradeoff is larger transactions taking up more block space and making the blockchain larger, taking longer to be validated, and (less importantly) to be signed.
