Getting Started with Git Bash
When you initialize a new Git repository, you will have an initial branch created for you. The default branch name is "master"; because of the negative association with this word, that is bound to change soon — many organizations in the Git ecosystem, like GitHub or GitLab, are replacing "master" with "main".

- I just noticed github changed the default branch from master to main

Renaming 'main' with purpose
Github is making it easier for you to change the default branch of your repository. Check out their recommendations for renaming your default branch.
- Why exactly does adding a README file to a new GitHub repository change the default branch from master to main?

House Republican, Democrat say political environment on Capitol Hill is 'toxic'
And to point out, the phrase “You can’t even use ‘master’ as a branch name in github anymore” is a blatant lie that you used to try and paint the argument with your biases. They changed ‘master’ to ‘main’ but you can name your main development branch whatever you want. If GitHub shifting to “main” over “master” as the default branch, but allowing every single person to keep using “master” for their main development branch, is some horrible thing, I really think you need to resort your priorities as a developer.

Continuous Integration for Monorepos
The function can take a second optional argument to change its behavior. For instance, if your repository default branch is main instead of master (GitHub’s new default), you’ll need to add default_branch: 'main':

The real reason behind why I switched
fyi github themself didn't really care about this--despite they made github/renaming repo. these repo below are using "master" as the default branch, sorted descending by star count,
I am not actually familiar with anyone who I believe is offended or excluded, but GitHub has put out a lot of information on the topic (https://sfconservancy.org/news/2020/jun/23/gitbranchname/ , https://stackoverflow.com/questions/64249491/difference-between-main-branch-and-master-branch-in-github ) and I am the kind of person to save every keystroke possible so just for that reason I'm not against it.

Deploying a stack via GitHub: Reference not found
The master term has long been the name for the default branch in Git itself, but in October last year GitHub changed the defaults for new repositories to main instead of master. You can find more about their decision here.

solved the master/main debate!
The "default" branch has been historically named "master" but recently some people are promoting "main" as a way to avoid slavery connotations related to the word master. Even github is promoting this change.
