The ReMarkable Streaming Tool v2: Elevating Remote Work Efficiency
If the goal is to share the visual contents of the pad, why not just stream the graphics over SSH?
I recommend checking out reStream: https://github.com/rien/reStream/

My remarkable arrives today. Which hacks do you recommend?
reStream is a fantastic way to get live video of your reMarkable's screen without signing up for the reMarkable Cloud (which flakes out often with LiveView).
-
Using screen share via USB
reStream is what you're looking for. rMview used to have a reStream-like feature, but it hasn't been updated in a long while.

Advice on Purchasing Remarkable or other e-ink tablet
But you can just ssh into the remarkable, it runs a Linux kernel. And then install software you want. I only use reSnap (which i wrote) and reStream

rmview question. Any alternatives to screensharing?
reStream worked well for me before rmview added ScreenShare support. The main downside with reStream is that the screen share is grayscale (as you see on the tablet), whereas rmview with ScreenShare has color support.

Firewall Blocking Cloud Sync
Since you're able to run custom software on the university machines anyway, May I suggest installing reStream (https://github.com/rien/reStream) on the device? A few similar options exist, see https://github.com/reHackable/awesome-reMarkable

I just an awesome ad about reMarkable 2. Was just about to buy it when I realised that just for screen sharing (my main usecase) I need to pay 50% of the tablet cost in a yearly fee. INSTANTLY went from 100% buy to 0% buy. So stupid.
https://github.com/rien/reStream If you are reasonably technically savvy, this works great and all you need to do is ssh into the tablet

Whiteboard equivalent?
the reMarkable 2 is probably among the most affordable hardware around for such a purpose and the most open one with SSH access right onto the device, but you would have to implement the whiteboard-part yourself and just treat it as a eInk-display that you need to program yourself most likely, so probably not suited for your usecase? You could possibly build something with https://github.com/rien/reStream , but you would still have to build a substantial part of what you want yourself.
