It's an adventure game about waking up in a weird, liminal world. Most of the backgrounds are generated using Art Breeder, and the game itself is written in JavaScript using Phaser

I started playing around with PhaserJS thanks to seeing @pau.codes talking about it and I have made a silly little game, well two actually as I have completed two tutorials so far and thoroughly enjoyed them. I was still using TypeScript and had to spend some time fighting with Parcel for packaging the code up (as my Instagram followers saw on my stories 🤣) but overall it has been a delightful experience.

Sadly normal game engines are not well suited in use for web development. I really suggest you either compile it as an android/ios game or look for a dedicated web development game engine such as Phaser.

If you're wanting to stay relatively secure financially and still experiment and release games to potentially large audiences, Javascript and Python are fine. Javascript has some mature libraries such as Phaser, which can be used to build all kinds of large 2d games that can be deployed on the web, mobile, or facebook games even. Lots of revenue and profit are made with games built with Phaser.

These technologies allow you render beautiful experiences on the web. Whether it be AR/VR with AFrame, exciting browser games with phaser or everything else with the likes of three.js and D3.js. These technologies let you tap into the power of the canvas and webGL.

If JS is your preference there are entire game engines or frameworks written in JS such as Phaser which provide collision detection, physics etc.

I'd look into using a Javascript based Game framework. Something like Phaser may serve your end goal a lot better.

As far as the game engine goes, I’d just use JS interop with a library like phaser! There’s a cljs wrapper out there for it, but the README doesn’t build confidence lol. There are tons of examples on the phaser site, including ones for games that involve multiplayer. It may be a good place to start.
  • p5, pygame, or something else to make a simple 2d block game?
If you wanted to stick with Javascript and the browser then options include https://phaser.io/ and https://impactjs.com/ but I have no experience of these myself.
