As someone mentioned you can round-robin connections, but then you don't get failover (without interruption, anyway).

What I think most of these solutions do is use MPTCP or a custom homebrew protocol to a server that then holds the actual TCP connection you want. There is an open source project for this:

  • How can i make my dual wan load balanced net to work?
If you're somewhat techie you're better off bonding, instead of load-balancing. E.g. get yourself an openmptcprouter and hook it up to a free Oracle Cloud Instance. Speed on the free Ampere instance caps out at a few gigibit so you should be OK given what you're working with. Just beware that using this, or even some commercial products like Speedify, can cause you to have problems when accessing some services as your public IP becomes that of the external endpoint and is sometimes blocked (e.g. Netflix).

  • Keep Trashcan and Cable?
Now I have a raspberry pi 4 running https://www.openmptcprouter.com/ and bonding through a VPS that costs $3.50/mo with unmetered bandwidth. It is working the best so far. It is based on openwrt- just today I experimented with QoS settings that greatly improved bufferbloat caused by ping spikes when T-Mobile Home Internet is under load.

  • Dual wan router for home?
If you or your friend are technically inclined, you may want to look into the OpenMPTCProuter project. Basically you flash this onto a supported router, feed it both (or more) internet connections, then point it at configured VPS. The router breaks up all the traffic over both connection and reassemble them on the VPS before sending it out to the internet. You effectively combine the speeds of all available internet connections while still retaining failover functionality. Not an off the shelf experience but definitely an improvement over traditional dual-wan options. Some alternative things to look into would be Speedify and Peplink Speedfusion Cloud
