I got really confused
Instead, there are many apps that are open source or from hobbyists that are free. Some will take donations to support further development. There are many sites that highlight free or open source apps. Macupdate.com is an aggregator of these. There are others like this list and others like it.

What makes MacOS so great?
To me it's the amazing set of open source apps and other free apps that devs have made over the years specifically for macos which makes using it a bliss! I wrote this blog listing some of those apps, also you can check out this collection Coupled with that is the Unix shell, awesome GUI and M1 hardware.
