Might be worth checking out onedarkpro.nvim. It's based on the VS Code namesake and has a darker option. I am the author btw!

Yes, I use onedarkpro.nvim plugin. I tried removing nvim-tree from its settings, yet still nothings changes aside from colours itself.

light/dark theme
I'll plug my color scheme onedarkpro.nvim. I have the same use case as yourself. In summer I spend most of my time with a light theme on and switch to darker at night. There's a helper function in the readme that shows how to easily switch between light and dark versions (it just uses vim.o.background).
