RaTeX: KaTeX-compatible LaTeX rendering engine in pure Rust
When developing KeenWrite[1], I opted to support only plain TeX. This is because I wanted math typesetting to work for either LaTeX or ConTeXt[2]. To render TeX in the preview panel, I forked NTS[3] into a highly optimized Java version. The lack of cross-platform event-based UI system is what kept me from writing the entire application in Rust. Has the Rust ecosystem improved with respect to Markdown processing, event-based UIs, and now TeX support?

TeX Live 2026 is available for download now
ConTeXt often goes unnoticed in TeX threads.

It's a monolithic kernel with a relatively sane collection of "setup" macros that, by and large, can accomplish much of what LaTeX and its packages can do.

The code and open-source tools I used to produce a science fiction anthology
I developed my Markdown editor, KeenWrite[0], to replace the shell scripts described in the Typesetting Markdown series[1]. KeenWrite takes in YAML document metadata (for variables), (R) Markdown documents, and generates XHTML. The XHTML is passed to ConTeXt[2] for PDF typesetting.
A feature matrix[3] compares various text formats and ecosystems for generating PDF files.

Is ConTeXt wiki down?
I'm been using ConTeXt on and off for a bit, and I haven't been able to access the ConTeXt wiki at https://wiki.contextgarden.net/

Typst, a modern LaTeX alternative written in Rust, is now open source
Take a look at ConTeXt, which does away with the packages approach of LaTeX and all the complexity. It is pretty mature (first came out in 91) and the underlying LuaTeX engine is even being used by some LaTeX distributions. It is pretty programmable as you can call Lua from within it. Here are some resources if you are interested: A not so short introduction to ConTeXt

Help with master thesis template
Note that this is ConTeXt, not LaTeX, but the two are quite similar on a day-to-day basis. ConTeXt is a bit less well-known, but the documentation is quite decent. If you're interested, I can recommend this and this and the ConTeXt wiki here.
