one CPU - one vote
The monero (cli/gui-) wallet has the solo mining feature build in, it only needs the network itself to mine new blocks. Dedicated mining software usually is using a pool to connect to and ask for new jobs. you can even setup a pool yourself (https://github.com/jtgrassie/monero-pool) .

Does --self-select do anything with xmrig?
self-select requires using a pool that has the feature enabled and submit-to-origin was added for merge mining capabilities.
