Looking For Some Guidance!
You may want to try a project using the ATmega328. This is the same chip that the Arduino uses, but you can program it directly without the Arduino libraries and IDE. The chip and the AVR ISP programmer are inexpensive and easy to get. You can breadboard a design and program it with a simple makefile.
