I have a shared web hosting account (specifically Pair networks shared hosting package 2). For one particular application (KeeWeb), I need to be able to access files stored on the server using WebDAV. The Pair accounts don't support WebDAV directly, and every other way I could find besides NextCloud to create WebDAV without access to change the Apache configuration involved too much stuff I didn't understand to install. At least the NextCloud installation and setup is pretty self-managing. I had to set the cron job interval to one hour — Pair doesn't allow anything more frequent — and I get a number of configuration warnings from NextCloud that appear to relate to things I can't change, but none of that seems to cause a problem.

In terms of safety, I would pose such questions to the developer: GitHub or About the dev website. There's also this: Hackmanit penetration test.

Consider open-source KeePass and/or KeeWeb. KeeWeb uses the file format established and maintained by KeePass, so you can mix and match them. (For example, I use KeeWeb on my desktop, but Keepass2Android on my phone.) You provide the online storage space -- something like Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive will work if you don't have a server of your own. The downside is that you have to get your hands dirty a bit figuring out how it works; but once you do, you realize you have control of everything.

This is a valid criticism for sure. I suppose the only truly cross platform options is KeeWeb, but you give up some features, mostly on mobile, eg. fingerprint unlock: | 2021-02-16
Keeweb is what I use on all platforms. Yeah it's an electron app but it supports natively storing the keepass file in the cloud. Works online or offline and has global autotype.

Those of you looking for an alternative, consider moving your data to a Keepass database. Its a more or less open file format, which a lot of different tools can read.

My goto tool currently is Keeweb - Its basically a SPA, can be used offline or online.

Keeweb + a google drive hosted keepass database file keeps my passwords available and synced across 5-6 different devices.

I use Works well for me since I switched from running Keepass locally. No extensions, though.
  • When existing alternatives to an AUR package exists (.rpm, .deb, .snap, .appimage), which one to use?
For for this KeeWeb example, I see in the github donwload section that they offer .snap and .AppImage but when I search for KeeWeb on Snapcraft store, I don't find any KeeWeb package, so I guess that the developers don't publish that but do provide the binaries.
Once you expand out those variables, your source will be, which is available from the Github page for that release. Looks like the AUR package hasn't upgraded to 1.16.7, but it was released 2 days could easily modify the PKGBUILD yourself anyway, if you wanted. $source is a predefined variable, so what happens is that makepkg will download from that URL and then save it as $pkgname-$pkgver.deb. It also automatically unpacks the .deb file because it's a recognized format.
