  • Tor Browser and Onion Service
Onion-Location is just a way for the site to advertise that it has onion version of the site, it doesn’t automatically redirect users to the onion service (unless the user change this behavior in the Tor Browser settings). So for example, if you go to, in the URL bar of Tor Browser, there will be a button that says (.onion available). You can try it yourself and visit say If the user change the Tor Browser settings to automatically redirect them to onion service whenever they visit a website that has onion service (and the website itself implement the Onion-Location), then Tor Browser will not ask the user and go straight to the onion website of the original clearnet site. So there won’t be any speed penalty whatsoever, I feel like.

  • Informational Post
“Tor (short for The Onion Router) works by sending your encrypted network traffic on an eccentric journey between Tor ‘nodes’. At each step along the way each Tor node helps keep you safe by never knowing what’s in your message and never knowing more about your data’s journey than the node it came from and the next one it’s going to.” (Stockley). Information from Tor’s website states that a Tor user’s traffic “ relayed and encrypted three times as it passes over the Tor network. The network is composed of thousands of volunteer-run servers known as Tor relays.” This introduces a gaping flaw. These so-called “secure” Tor networks are vulnerable to a major security issue. The fact that the data has to be decrypted at a volunteer’s Tor exit node means that all the traffic flowing through the nodes can be read, analysed and abused. The fact that anyone can set up a Tor exit node also raises a few eyebrows. What if the person who set up the node, is the same person trying to read the traffic passing through it? A honeycomb study set up by Sophos Security shows that, one non-malicious login attempt’s credentials were logged and stolen, with the website receiving 167 attempted logins using those same credentials. In 2007, Dan Egerstad, a Swedish computer security consultant set up 5 Tor exit nodes, and he was able to collect unprecedented amounts of data, combing through it he realised that included data from employees of the Australian, Japanese, Iranian, India and Russia embassies, as well as the Indian Ministry of Defence. This data against these types of networks indicates that unfortunately, Tor is not this magical cloak of invisibility but instead, potential nesting grounds for Five-Eyes surveillance, a surveillance group targeting private communications worldwide.
