- How do I find more niche, smaller mastodon servers?
-
Mastodon has reached 13M accounts
The latter. Source is at https://github.com/gallizoltan/usercount which states:
> A bot which counts users from all instances listed at https://instances.social then posts statistics to Mastodon.
> User Count Bot for all known Mastodon instances

For members of "science twitter" who are opposed to Twitter's recently deployed content-wall - what are some alternative platforms that help academics openly share and discuss scientific research?
For those on the fence, but know more about how instances work, this resource may help you pick a relevant one. There is also this Github resource that enlists all academia-based instances.

Migration Guide / Plan
Find and join communities in Reddit alternatives. Here's a list of Mastodon communities, and here's an online tool to find and parse through the different Mastodon communities. This is a list of popular Lemmy servers. However, do keep an eye out as some existing subreddit's moderators may create new communities on these sites.

What's next for still photographers after Instagram?
They are a Mastodon instance that is focused on photography and photographers. I saw them earlier as well but registration for new accounts is currently closed. You can find other instances though.
-
Mastodon provides the highest (over 12%) engagement under posts
The way I do it:
Go to https://joinmastodon.org/servers or https://instances.social/ and find one or more instances you want to join. Use the same account name (but not password, obviously) for all of them. Think of instances as subreddits, but each subreddit is on its own separate server.
You can manage those identities though a third party app or just a folder of browser bookmarks.
If you're already on Twitter, you can find anyone on your follow list who is also on Mastodon and follow them. You'll wind up with a json file you'll need to upload for each account.

A proposal message to mods, do you want to have a second option besides Reddit, or a place to migrate? Lemmy is suitable.
As this is a FOSS project, I presume only the lemmy.ml instance doesn't allow porn? Is there a Q&A style lemmy instance finder that does allow porn a la https://instances.social/ ? Because https://join-lemmy.org/instances is all I could find and that doesn't seem helpful. How do I find the most popular porn supported instance?
Is there a mastodon-esque Q&A style instance finder but for lemmy? If not, could you build one?

I'll probs leave reddit if RIF shuts down. Any cool places to hang out you'd recommend?
https://instances.social/ and https://joinmastodon.org/servers

Mastodon Hit 10M Users
https://github.com/gallizoltan/usercount
The bot is open source, it crawls the list at https://instances.social and checks on each instance how many users they have and how many toots (statuses) they have.
