  • Comparison between Helm and Kustomize for Kubernetes yaml management
So I am not saying here one is better than the other (that is Helm or Kustomize) but if you want to stick with Helm for the release management features but limit the templating pains and have Kustomize-like features within Helm you can check out the HULL library here. It is fully integrated into Helm in form of a library chart so it comes at no cost of requiring extra tooling to use it.
  • Introducing HULL - the Helm Uniform Layer Library chart
Great, much appreciated! If you have any question on how to work with it or find any problems please let me know so we can improve it, be it documentation or bugs. We took care to write a fairly big number of unit tests and use it for our own charts as well with the desired outcome so I am confident that it can be of use for you. If you need some more examples on how to define various objects please also check out the unit tests sample sources folder. Thanks again for your interest!
With the goal of improving this we have written the HULL Helm library chart which offers an alternative way of creating, maintaining and using objects in Helm charts. Utilizing the JSON schema validation capability and Go Templating functions of Helm to a great extent, the YAML content that describes the Kubernetes objects of an application can be dynamically rendered in a factory-method like fashion by HULL's Go Templating functions. So no custom YAML template files are required altogether when object rendering is deferred to HULL and the complete object structure is provided in the hull sub-chart specification within your parent charts values.yaml.
