  • Emacs build with Mac OS retina support other than emacs mac port
    reddit.com/r/emacs | 2021-04-10
Is there any emacs build other than https://github.com/railwaycat/homebrew-emacsmacport that support retina screens on Mac OS? The only reason I use emacs mac port is because of the retina support, but I don't care for any of their other features and I miss a good implementation of emacs daemon. The real reason I want to abandon emacs mac port is because it is extremely buggy (at least in my experience), frequently hanging and often crashing when using eww. I cannot find any other emacs distribution that supports retina display, which I really need because otherwise all pdf files and image files look horribly pixelated.

According to the github repo's readme, you can build with flag --with-no-title-bars. I can confirm this works.

Since you're on a Mac, install this version of Emacs. It's the "Mac Port", but don't get too hung-up on which version you're using, you can always swap it later. Personally, I installed it at ~/Applications but you can open the app from anywhere (and tools like Spotlight/Alfred should find it just fine).

I'm successfully running Emacs natively using the Yamamoto fork. It just needs to be installed via the formula on Homebrew currently rather than the cask.

  • Which method / version of emacs to install for orgmode use only?
    reddit.com/r/orgmode | 2021-02-13
I definitely recommend railway’s Emacs port for someone starting with Emacs on macOS. It will look great without any configuration and will behave like a macOS app. Once you'll get more comfortable with Emacs and decide to customise it you could pick a different version (like emacs-plus) but then it will be more clear than to you what features you need/care about.
  • 'Best' Emacs port for Mac - early 2021 edition?
    reddit.com/r/emacs | 2021-02-12
If you use `(server-start)` and not `emacs --daemon` then `emacs-mac` has slightly better integration with MacOS (see here: https://github.com/railwaycat/homebrew-emacsmacport/issues/52), otherwise `emacs-plus` should be enough for everybody.
    reddit.com/r/emacs | 2021-02-12
It's actually simpler than that. GitHub user railwaycat maintains download-ready binaries here: https://github.com/railwaycat/homebrew-emacsmacport/releases

I use Mitsuharu Yamamoto's build (which can be downloaded easily here). I love it.

Previously I was using the emacs-mac port, installed using Homebrew and https://github.com/railwaycat/homebrew-emacsmacport. It always worked great, and it has good integration with Emacs, including proper use of ligatures in fonts, etc.
