Busy Bar
I recently set up a "busy" indicator using Home Assistant (HA) and the Home Assistant Companion app for macOS. The desktop app exposes various MacBook sensors to HA, which can then trigger automations.
When my microphone activates, it triggers an automation that powers a socket. A red LED lamp lights up, signaling to everyone that I’m on a call or recording a video.

The Home Assistant companion app
The companion app is readily available at the Apple Store. Note that the app is both free as a beer and free as a bird. It's provided under the Apache v2 License. If interested, the source code is on GitHub.

Remotely Access Your Home Assistant Instance Securely
Note: The iOS companion app does not support mTLS. See the discussion in #1788 and the comment from Franck Nijhof (one of the Home Assistant maintainers) on PR #2144 for more information.

Strange iPhone WebSocket problem only occurs on my iPhone, but no other device
checked out the source of the Home Assistant app, compiled and ran it on my Mac Book Pro successfully. Is the same as I used on my Mac OS X which support Mac OS / iOS / Apple Watch.

2. Firebase Cloud Messaging, for push notifications (since we can't talk to APNS directly in HA)
FCM is a dependency I'm actively trying to kill off in favor of an implementation that is both end-to-end encrypted and talks directly to Apple's Push Notification Service. Apple would not allow a solution where HA talks directly to APNS as they do not want that many active connections, and it would require disclosing private keys for the App STore account.
