Free Use of gpt3 and gpt4 APIs for Automatically Generating Multi-Language README.md
However, the translator used at that time was a third-party Linux package, and the translation quality was as poor as Google Translate. With the emergence of ChatGPT, the author thought of delegating the translation task of this project to GPT. However, due to OpenAI not being free, this idea was never implemented. Recently, I stumbled upon an open-source project called gpt4free, which essentially allows you to use gpt's API for free. It's truly remarkable... Using the open-source project gpt4free, I immediately modified the functionality of action-translate-readme from before.

OpenAI Threatens Popular GitHub Project with Lawsuit over API Use
Except they did secure their API. Take this implementation: https://github.com/xtekky/gpt4free/blob/main/gpt4free/italyg...
The site has a rate limit, doesn't expose their API key, and it has a CSRF token. In terms of non-intrusive measures they could have taken, they did it all right.
So what's left on the table is intrusive stuff: HN has a lot of people constantly whining about how they're stuck in captcha hell because their hand built Lenovo running Firefox on BSD compiled on an abacus isn't recognized as a real client... but aggressive captchas are going to become even more pervasive if every GPT based product must fight off proxy attempts.
> GPT4free existed way before GPT-4 was announced as far as I know
Based on what? First commit seems to have been March 29th (https://github.com/xtekky/gpt4free/commit/fc995b874199ce985a...), with the express purpose of providing GPT-4 / GPT-3.5 access for free:
> # openai-gpt4
> Free gpt4 / gpt3.5 access through several reverse engineered api's (nat.dev, poe.com, t3nsor.com etc...)
And GPT-4 was announced by OpenAI 14th March. Also would be weird if the initial commit references things that haven't happened yet.
I have to ask if anyone's actually following what GPT4All was doing.
GPT4All was about abusing random projects that make paid queries to OpenAI, not abusing OpenAI itself.
Take what they were doing to phind: https://github.com/xtekky/gpt4free/issues/153
This is like if you found an image hosting site that uploads to S3, then wrote a fake S3 client that actually uploads to the image hosting site, and called it "Free S3 access". Amazon gets paid either way, you're not ripping them off in anyway.
Honestly this is OpenAI going above and beyond what they actually need to do, and for some reason people are using it as an excuse to take low effort swings at them.

Gpt4free repo given takedown notice by OpenAI
In case the repository disappears I share an archive of it https://archive.softwareheritage.org/browse/revision/7ef85f4...
They put my site https://cocalc.com, which has chatgpt API integration, into this gpt4free. As a result, I had to modify https://cocalc.com to require sign in before providing the ChatGPT functionality to visitors, and I also explicitly updated our terms of service to clarify how our API can be used. I made a pull request https://github.com/xtekky/gpt4free/pull/461 to Gpt4free to have them remove cocalc. They were respectful, with some discussion back and forth, and they merged the PR. I personally don't think that Gpt4free should be taken down, so long as they respect the explicit requests of projects they proxy. They were certainly respectful with cocalc.
