  • I am designing an underwater ROV for a new project. What software is useful for simulating thruster force and vehicle behavior? Hoping to play with different thruster locations and configurations. The design is in Solidworks and it would be useful to run some flow and torque simulations.
I'm not sure how helpful this might be, but you could always look into UUV Simulator which is based on ROS (Robot Operating System) and the Gazebo physics engine for simulation. The package assumes that you are using Ubuntu and is everything is open-source. It features thruster modules, a lift and drag plugin for simulation of fins, hydrodynamic and hydrostatic forces, and much more. There are existing ROVs with all kinds of sensors and controllers available to explore the software.

Some of my early projects involved making a simple chat system (just point to point between two computers on the same network) and testing robotics algorithms using Gazebo (at least, I think it was an earlier version of Gazebo). For that latter one, I did things like take an image representing the environment that the robot was in, and planned obstacle-avoiding paths between different points in the environment. Writing a small game is another common early goal.

A large number of robots are Linux-based and use something called the Robot Operating System (ROS) If you’re interested in a career in robotics, becoming familiar with Linux and ROS is a great way to stand out. Open-source simulation environments such as Gazebo ( have loads of tutorials that you can work though which will give you experience developing robotic software. Many of the simulated sensors and robots can be operated as 'hardware-in-the-loop' which means you can swap the simulated version for the real one. This means that your virtual experience (if you don’t have the hardware) is just as good.

Gazebo is quasi-supported on Windows 10. I was able to integrate it with ROS2. The core gazebo_ros_pkgs libraries work just fine, but I have noticed that the Gazebo GUI is quite buggy on Windows, stuff sometimes doesn't render right, and the real-time shader system flat out doesn't work.
