If you're using Gnome, one alternative I'd offer is gTile. It's a Gnome extension that gets you some decent tiling features, including aesthetic gaps.

I've been using gTile with decent results, though it has historically broken for me at most gnome-shell version upgrades in the 30s. So far so good for 40 though!
