I'm looking forward to have more "ownership" of my digital identity, and I want to start by controlling the domain of my e-mail addresses.
Been searching possible solutions and I think an e-mail forwarding service is a pretty good middleground, so I can keep my Gmail / Outlook accounts active while also being able to create "identities" on the fly.
It has come down to three different services:

Interesting setup. I use https://forwardemail.net for this use case. It’s certainly easier to setup, and it’s cheap ($18 for 6 months).
It means I have email setup for all my side/small projects and spare domains, all forwarding to the few active inboxes I keep.3 projects | news.ycombinator.com | 18 Nov 2022

Happy user of https://forwardemail.net for $3/month for unlimited domains/aliases. This is the only subscription I pay that I believe has a fair (cheap?) price.

Ask HN: The middle ground for email selfhosting

I have good luck using https://forwardemail.net for having email address on my own custom domain. This will catch inbound email (configured from DNS MX record) to my gmail, and for outbound I set the custom domain as gmail alias.
Doesn't solve privacy, data ownership, nor google lock-in issue (but at least if I lost my gmail, I can move to a real email selfhost solution and keep my address). But as my need is just to have custom domain address for the cool factor of it, this simple setup works flawlessly.
Should we own the free stuff we pay for?

That said, I'm planning to migrate to either self hosted or a paid service which is not run by algorithms and where customer supports exist (in that regards big tech is terrible: facebook, google, paypal = worthless customer support).
I completely agree with your premise though:

Same problem as well; there are so many attack vectors it's absurd.
I've tried rspamd, SpamAssassin, and so many other alternatives. Then I decided to try writing my own in JS.
Spam Scanner (work in progress) is at https://spamscanner.net with source code at https://github.com/spamscanner. Trying to do it in a privacy-focused way, which is incredibly challenging to say the least.
Fortunately we're thinking that with ARF in combination with human curators (privacy-focused where sensitive data is redacted during curation process), and a combination of tech - will make this at least a bit better - and completely open source too.
We're in the progress of building an SMTP alternative, so we're not just a forwarding service (Forward Email at https://forwardemail.net) - and I hope to have Spam Scanner hooked in to individual inboxes as well, so it gets smarter for the individual users as opposed to group-think.
I'm hoping that we can at least make things a bit smarter with some scrappy measures over time. Hoping to launch SMTP by April so you can use Thunderbird, Apple Mail, or K-9 for instance with your own inbox running Spam Scanner.
