Go Five and a half days after the problem was posted, I still scored under 10,000.

Raku and Go because the Raku implementation took tens of minutes to get a slightly-too-high answer, so I figured it would be easier to iterate on bug fixing in a language that could get a wrong answer in seconds. After a couple days of occasional work and a very tedious Go test case that demonstrated my move logic was correct, I realized that my bug was in discarding board states if I'd seen them show up before, even if the new one came at a lower total cost. For example, inefficiently moving As into position before moving D in would produce a high-cost solved board faster than moving the D first and then efficiently moving the As. By changing my seen set to a map of board state to cost, my code suddenly worked.

Raku 3364/1406. Memoization cached 22828 trees, saving 135153328222302 wins for part 2, so it ran in less than half a minute, which is a big improvement over the last two days.

Raku 3524/4678 after a long time before I realized the actual input has an important difference from the example input and another long time before I realized I only half-fixed a bug after I implemented a faster part 2 solution.

Raku and Go 10828/10559 (because I spent about 40 hours thinking that 3D rotation is commutative across axes, until I did a second round of experimenting with a Rubik's cube). The Raku solution runs in about 41 minutes, the Go solution runs in about 41 seconds.

Raku, 4863/4996. I thought for awhile about analytic solutions, concluded that it was probably covered by some calculus or linear algebra that I forgot, and decided to brute force it. I'm glad I did, since part 2 would be even more challenging analytically. I also managed to introduce a whole bunch of bugs, including an extended period of WTF until I realized that (25-7i).re ∈ 20..30 is False because Complex.re returns a Num but a Range of Int only accepts ∈ on Ints. Meanwhile, (25-7i).re ~~ 20..30 (smartmatch, not set containment) returns True because There's More Than One Way To Do It, And Some Of Them Are Subtly Wrong.

Raku, 2388 / 2366, which suggests that everyone else who worked at my pace also quickly realized that part 2 would be "Evaluate the stack of values."
