Rust is Boring
My advice is, when you feel you need that challenge, install DOSBox or DOSBox-X and Open Watcom C/C++, DJGPP, or gcc-ia16 and do some retro-programming. You'll also get the fun of being able to do low-level hardware twiddling and rely on DOS being so simple that it's effectively an RTOS.

Can Emacs do this?
Are you referring to the "DOSBox" program, or were you referring to the windows command prompt? DOSBox (the software program) is not dependent upon Windows to operate. I use it from Linux, myself.

Does anyone worry they won't be able to play their games in the future?
I've been gaming for something like 30 years now, and I've got a lot of old games I can't play right now. I could probably make them work... Get a USB disk drive and throw DOSbox on my machine... Tinker around a bit... I can probably make them work... If the disks are still readable... But it's not 100% certain.

Can some help my install Duke Nukem 3d on a computer?
Woah, you are installing it the disc? That is neat! This CD with the original game were designed to be exclusively installed on MS-DOS (src: Duke Nukem 3D User Guide, page 1). In preparations to be installed on more modern hardware, you’ll need to install DOSBox, and also check the directory where your external CD-drive is recognized at (e.g. F:\ or D:\) so you can access it through the aforementioned software. You begin on DOSBox by mounting the drive you want to install the game to, typing ‘mount’ followed by the drive’s directory letter twice with the last bearing a backslash (e.g. ‘mount d: d:\'), and thus mount the drive to DOSBox so it can access said drive. The same procedure applies to the CD-drive. Access the CD-drive by typing it’s directory (e.g. ‘F:’). You can check the contents of the directory by typing in ‘dir’, which will allow you to see which software to run so you can install the game (Usually named ‘INSTALL.EXE’). So you type in the name of the 'install' software, and follow the instructions of the installation wizard, which is no different to a modern day one.

Another pointless question about C/C++/asm knowledge.
It's not necessary to learn C, C++, or assembly but, if you do want to, try hobby programming for MS-DOS (eg. inside DOSBox or DOSBox-X) since it's simpler and will give you a niche where what you produce can still be a case of "best tool for the job". (eg. Open Watcom C/C++ for the compiler, using snippets of assembly for FFI calls to BIOS APIs, etc.)
