Using emacs as a study environment
If, like me, OP is a little slap-dash, happy-go-lucky, can't-decide-what-to-use, lazy, or uncoordinated, https://github.com/jrblevin/deft is a pretty handy package.

nvALT 2
For (neo)vim users, there's notational fzf [1], which also requires fzf to be installed [2]. For Emacs, there's Deft [3]. They all what to me are nvalt's core functionality which is fuzzy search into quick note creation/editing. They can also be used in conjunction with nvalt or other markdown based applications since all of them use plaintext. For Deft, you can also choose to create .org files.

Different behaviors for widget-button-press and widget-button-click
I am trying to make an extension to the wonderful Deft package that can preview/view files in a side window of the Deft buffer (similar to the functionality of the original Notational Velocity). Deft normally takes a set of text files and for each file, displays a widget in the Deft buffer that, when pressed/clicked, opens the corresponding file. For my extension, I would like the file to be opened in the side window with that window having focus, but with the Deft buffer window still visible. I have had some success getting this to work, but I came across a situation with different behaviors depending whether one "presses" the file widget (by hitting [RET] when the point is on a file widget), or one "clicks" the file widget (by clicking the widget with the mouse):

New grad student, new to emacs, hoping to use for academic note taking/writing, completely lost on where to start
For note taking, deft is neat, lightweight, and can be set up to create .org files by default, so you can use all of org-mode's functionality too.

Standard Notes is a safe place for your notes, thoughts, and life's work
I use deft. A hot key brings up the list, then typing narrows the list based on name or content.
