COVID Alert App Cost Canada $20 Million, Used Only 869 Times in November
Also important to not that COVID Shield was a voluntary project by the Shopify team. They did created it purely to help people be safe and get notified if they were in contact with a confirmed case. COVID Alert was created as a fork of that app.
https://github.com/CovidShield and https://github.com/cds-snc/covid-alert-app . Built with Apple and Google to use low energy signals, needed an iOS upgrade for it and a newer android version which many couldn’t upgrade to.
It was developed by CDS. It’s open source too.
Just going to add that you can find the source code for the app here: https://github.com/cds-snc/covid-alert-app, including instructions on how to build the app yourself, just in case the poster above you was worried about any possible adding tracking before the app got to the app store.
Most amazingly... the Canadian Digital Service's COVID Alert app was a fork of a completely free app https://github.com/cds-snc/covid-alert-app . If this is what they used... wtf did $3.5 million even go into?
The vast majority (75%+) of the money spent on the app was on advertising and promotion. Looking at the commit history of the COVID Alert, it appears that all commits since August 13 2020 have been by the government's developers ("Canadian Digital Services") which would mean that the bulk of the actual app-related costs would be internal salaries and operational/hosting costs.
