A few basic questions about AwesomeWM
The default rc.lua file will get you started. However, it looks as though you're wanting to get into some customising and themes. Therefore, a good place to start would be by installing a third party theme and modifying that. One I'd recommend is awesome-copycats

did you try the copy cats themes?. its better not to start entirely from scratch if its your first time in my opinion. try installing one of the themes here and start tweaking. you will understand whats happening eventually. sorry if this isnt of much use.
