Maintaining an open source project
By forcing yourself to become a maintainer first and contributor second, you will be forced to come up with a workflow that works for your project. You will be forced to think of how other people can contribute. This will give you more insight when making future issues or pull requests in other's projects. My first open-source project is a Discord bot. It's nothing fancy. But by working on it, I'm learning Git, Semantic Versioning, how to open/close/label issues and pull requests.
Labels: Define proper labels and don't forget to describe what they mean. Explain how they work separately or together in a Contributing Guide. I use a simple two-stage process. If you're using Scrum, then specify how the labels work by giving examples.
README, LICENSE, Documentation, Guides, etc: Don't forget to update these things as your project ages. Requirements may change and you need to communicate that to contributors.
