Elegant/Minimalist Way of Showing Time & Battery Life
For time and date (and a lot of other stuff ;) ) I use the Gen Mon plugin... The output of the scripts, along with FontAwesome icons/ fonts looks amazingly minimal and useful, IMHO. If you want to, take a look at this: Genmon Scripts

Increase size of text in calendar
Don't know if this might help you, but I replaced the builtin one with the GenMon plugin and a custom Bash script that when clicked opens cal on either an xterm or the XFCE Terminal. Since the calendar opens on a Terminal, you can customize the looks (font or whatever) the way you want to.

Do you know any temperature monitor on the panel ?
OP. if you want to, I have a little Bash script that I use with the Generic Monitor, to get the CPU temp on the XFCE Panel genMon-cpu-temp.sh.
