  • "Please insert the game CD" Zero Hour
Due to the memory limits of 32bit apps, and the badly-managed memory of the SAGE game engine used in Generals/Zero Hour (memory leaks), it's most likely impossible without Out of Memory errors occurring. Thyme and OpenSage are open-source projects that are aimed to fix SAGE's faults, but I don't believe anything truly workable is available as of this reply.
  • Command and Conquer - Open Source Engine Recreation Project, OpenSAGE is in development!
We also have https://github.com/TheAssemblyArmada/Thyme in development which is being developed along the same lines as the recently released GTA reversing project and targets ZH. It's even playable as it hooks into the original game engine to fill in what is missing.

If this was posted on the back of the recent news about GTA being reimplemented, this project isn't really the same thing, https://github.com/TheAssemblyArmada/Thyme is more like the recently released GTA reversing project and targets Zero Hour. It's even playable as it hooks into the original game engine to fill in what is missing. OpenSAGE is a new engine in development intended to play the same content as SAGE.
  • GTA III and Vice City fully reverse engineered, with ports to many platforms

Get ghidra and follow tutorials for using it to load your target game into it. You then need to map out functions and work out what data structures they used and start writing C/C++ equivalents to what you see. If you want to test them and replace functions one at a time, you can use various techniques to inject your code as a DLL into the original and have it patch the existing functions to call yours. As a shameless plug, check out https://github.com/TheAssemblyArmada/Thyme which is a project I'm involved in doing something similar for C&C Generals Zero Hour to see what we are doing.
