What's going on with the Mac version repository?
Telegram's official website links to a repo from user overtake, but that hasn't been updated in six months, despite the app obviously getting many updates in that timeframe. The repo has a few pull requests—some open, some closed, but nothing closed in the last fix months.

[Q] Where to find older versions of Telegram for Mac
Hmm that seems to be different application. Apparently there is a Telegram for MacOS and then there is Telegram Desktop. I was using the former. Quite confusing.
There is a link on macOS page for beta version and older releases too.

"Telegram Desktop" is the cross-platform, QT-based app you are probably familiar with. But there is also "Telegram for macOS" which at first glance appears to be native. Here's a link: https://macos.telegram.org

PS: If you are not able to clone Telegram Stable https://macos.telegram.org, but only Telegram Desktop https://desktop.telegram.org (so something like Bettergram and others), you can still write us, even if we prefer a cloned Telegram Stable Mac App.

Telegram iOS: Voice chats in any group can now seamlessly turn into group video calls
Might you be looking at Telegram Desktop? They actually have two macOS apps, and Telegram for macOS feels like a very decent macOS/Apple system citizen. It's got an iOS bend, but I definitely would not accuse it of being material-design-y.
