What we ended up doing was actually taking this Gamemaker 8 Code, which was an old community project that already fixed some bugs (a full list can be seen here ). I then ported that into Gamemaker Studio, and together with the other devs we were able to then port THAT into Studio 2. (I have worked fairly extensively with Gamemaker before, but the others are learning Gamemaker for the first time and are doing incredible work already!)
