  • Grandma's recipe for mastering regular static analysis

Let's run an experiment to see how much time this approach can save—I used the ScreenToGif project, which we recently checked for bugs.
  • How can one code line crash application? Looking for issues and vulnerabilities in ScreenToGif
    1 project | dev.to | 2 Dec 2024
We've checked the 2.41.1 version of the ScreenToGif code. The PVS-Studio analyzer has found quite a number of erroneous code fragments, and we've picked out the most interesting and diverse ones to tell you about. I'd like to highlight one potential vulnerability that we've managed to reproduce directly in the application. Let's get it started :)

Currently I use a tool called ScreenToGif on Windows, which allows making both GIFs as well as render a video out of the captured sequence of frames: https://www.screentogif.com/ (source: https://github.com/NickeManarin/ScreenToGif)

That said, a lot of open source software faces issues with funding and also developer burnout, or something other reasons for a project just... ceasing. Like there's this lovely piece of backup software called BackupPC, that covered all of my needs, but there hasn't been a new release in forever: https://github.com/backuppc/backuppc

What's worse, sometimes the community is just left with no status updates, and don't even know whether a project is abandoned: https://github.com/backuppc/backuppc/issues/518

In cases where nobody cares enough to make forks and keep it alive it just... fizzles out.

  • Gifski: Optimized GIF Encoder with Libimagequant
    4 projects | news.ycombinator.com | 21 May 2024
While on the subject of gifs, I'd like to recommend ScreenToGif. As the name suggests it supports screen recording, but the editor is nice for other gifs as well. It's easy to remove duplicate frames, change timing for all or some frames, etc. It can use ffmpeg and gifski for the gif encoding.

Also, I just learnt this, gifski has integrated gifsicle for lossy gif compression.

  • Adding Smooth Animations to Diagrams in Draw.io
    1 project | dev.to | 1 Dec 2023
By following these steps, your diagram will be exported as an SVG, keeping the animation intact. If you find yourself on a platform that doesn't support SVG, you can use external programs like ScreenToGif. This program lets you record your screen and export the recording as a GIF. Handy for platforms that prefer GIFs over SVGs.
  • FFmpeg Explorer
    4 projects | news.ycombinator.com | 25 Aug 2023
ScreenToGif has a very nice editor that can make cinemagraphs, remove duplicate frames, etc.

ffmpeg can make gifs, but I don't know how you would do stuff like static regions. It could probably be done with some masking and filtering, but I think you would need to make the mask separately so why not use a GUI gif editor instead?

  • I'M A NOOB
    1 project | /r/blenderhelp | 25 Aug 2023
If you need to show the screen, you should take a screen shot of the entire window, via Window->SaveScreenshot, rather than using a cell phone or something. Take the entire screen instead of just the one part you think is broken. The reason it's broken is not the part, but something else, or you would have already figured out why it's broken. (Sadly, blender no longer has built in screen-animation recording for some reason, but I'm told https://www.screentogif.com/ is a good tool to have handy.)
