What are some cool modern libraries you enjoy using?
Nope, simdjson is originally from Daniel Lemire who also often blogs about fancy low level optimizations: https://lemire.me/blog/ I'm just a happy user :)

Escaping strings faster with AVX-512
There's a copy of the loop used on the escape function inside the avx512_escape function [0]. Is it needed or just a copy and paste mistake? (I know nothing about vector instructions)

What are some great engineering blogs?
If you write a lot of performance critical software https://lemire.me/blog/ is must-read.
If you are into distributed systems then aphyr.com/jepsen.io are also must-read.

Where do people learn to write truly quick software?
If you do enough of this, at some point, your awareness starts to increase enough where you'll develop a good understanding of the state of the art. Or rather, an outline of it. For example, if you're interested in low level optimization and you read enough code, you'll almost certainly run into references of Daniel Lemire's work. You might not know to start there, but IMO the process above will ultimately lead you to places like that.
