Automatic enabling HDR
I've just discovered https://github.com/Codectory/AutoActions which detects when a user-defined process starts and can toggle HDR on, then back off again when it exits. I've gone through the list at https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/List_of_games_that_support_high_dynamic_range_display_(HDR)) to add entries for all the HDR-capable titles that I have installed.

PSA: Playnite Launcher has a "HDR Mode" per game!
For anyone with any of the myriad of HDR monitors that prefers to leave desktop mode in SDR RGB, I just discovered that the excellent Playnite game launcher has a feature where you can enable HDR on a per-game basis. Simply tick the "Enable HDR support" option under "Advanced" tab for the settings of the games that you want HDR turned on for. I was previously using the now-abandoned AutoActions for this, so glad to see there's an alternative in a tool I already use.

Picked up a neo g9. Do I need to switch to hdmi over dp?
If your gpu supports HDMI 2.1 it will be better for bandwidth. As for HDR, while windows is getting better its still not great for desktop usage IMO. I like to use this tool here: https://github.com/Codectory/AutoActions/releases/tag/1.9.19.

HDR in game with windows SDR
There's an app called AutoActions which will allow you to automatically enable HDR on a per app basis which works really well for me. Unfortunately the author is no longer maintaining it, so hopefully nothing breaks!
