Australia's overall rail network isn't exactly comparable to the United States. Australia only has one transcontinental East-West railway, and someday we'll have two North-South transcontinental railways. At the same time, freight demand is far, far lower and Australia does not have any major inland towns which require rail freight in the same sense as the United States.
