Yeah, that's my impression. The PHPDoc Treesitter repo is marked as experimental https://github.com/claytonrcarter/tree-sitter-phpdoc. It seems from a cursory look at the open issues that @param should be supported, so maybe our colorschemes don't have that group highlighted differently? Might be worth looking into the repo regardless.
That project is the treesitter grammar installed/used by https://github.com/nvim-treesitter/nvim-treesitter. I don't have any familiarity with other methods of integration.
