I ended up finding groups online (roll20.net specifically). It was like interviewing for a job, where I applied to a ton of groups, tried a bunch out, ended up leaving like 90% of them, but eventually I found people who I had a ton of fun with. Not sure how much you want to do it in person or if online would work, but trying online definitely opens your options. It's been a wild ride for me over the past 4 years, I've played thousands of hours, ran and participated in many long campaigns, made my closest friends through this hobby, driven across the USA to visit many of them at this point.
