UCarp
Discontinued UCARP allows a couple of hosts to share common virtual IP addresses in order to provide automatic failover. It is a portable userland implementation of the secure and patent-free Common Address Redundancy Protocol (CARP, OpenBSD's alternative to the patents-bloated VRRP).
There are two other options both in ports, one is ucarp which is carp in userspace https://github.com/jedisct1/UCarp . The reasons for why you use ucarp vs kernel carp are not always clear. Easiest option is you want to have a HA setup where the thing is also in userspace and you want to trigger some script to run on failure . ucarp is not suitable for firewall failover more application level. The other option is FreeVvrpd https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=freevrrpd&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=FreeBSD+9.0-RELEASE+and+Ports&arch=default&format=html again Freevvrpd is a userspace HA option that can do some things carp can't easily , do but the end result is the same.
