I've only built dactyl variants, so I don't have much in the way of tips for designing new cases. I will say that using cura's tree supports made it much easier to remove the enormous amount of support material that's needed. The variant that I've built is the tightyl, which I really like. I modified the layout to only have 5 columns, if you're interested.
