Yay! I’m excited this is coming. It was often a pain point raised by sandboxed apps for elementary AppCenter; since apps couldn't modify system settings (rightfully!), they also couldn't add themselves to the system-wide keyboard shortcuts. I raised the issue on behalf of AppCenter app developers last year and it has been great to see the cross-desktop and community collaboration to spec it out and implement it.
In all honesty, WebCord is basically the closest an alternate client can get to being official; the maintainer specifically states that they don't want to inject any scripts into the page, precisely so that the client is as ToS abiding as possible. It's effectively just a browser, so I don't really know how Discord could block it/ban users for using it (or why they would even bother). I guess anything's possible, though.
