brew install is how you install stuff using Homebrew (https://brew.sh), which will automatically get you a version that works on your machine even if it has to compile it locally from source. Which means you have to have the dev tools (Xcode and its command-line components) installed in order to use brew. But once it’s set up, it’s a much easier way to install just about any sort of open-source add-on software for your Mac.
