I have used vibration in the past to determine if the washing machine was running. It was moderately successful. The code is here. I used an accelerometer.

  Use a NodeMCU and 2 MPU-6050's to monitor the status of your washer and dryer.

I've been using this code combined with home assistant forever, works very well. Uses an esp8266 and MPU6050 it would probably have enough to get you going.
