    Here is a project on github i just found https://github.com/ajcord/WIFI-84 which seems to have the same goal as you. In the project a esp8266 ist used, which is the same module as on the Wemos D1. But seems not like an easy thing todo, but with help of the schematic you could make it work. Also the project seems to be not maintained anymore... Good Luck!
