Would it be okay to open source it? May be may be not but it should be made clear that open source doesn't mean free(as in gratis) rather it is all about freedom to do what you want. A lot of people do not understand this crucial difference and hence argue against it. At the end it is upon developers if they want to do that or not. We should be thankful to them that most of the things are free in obsidian and others which are not has some alternative/hacky way to do that. If someone doesn't like the model, then they can use alternatives like Logseq which is really good and still under development phase.
