  • awesome-selfhosted

A list of Free Software network services and web applications which can be hosted on your own servers

  • Maybe a music server to stream your music collection, an ebook server, document management, a calendar, an email server, instant messaging (xmpp, matrix, whatever), a web server, a game server, video surveillance, a VPN for accessing your home network remotely, a network-wide adblocker, a password manager, etc. etc. Notice that most of these things are available as SaaS. I don't need to host plex, I can just pay a subscription to a streaming service. I don't need a music streamer, I can use spotify. I don't need a NAS, I can pay for cloud storage. Many selfhosters are people concerned with privacy and data ownership. (Especially understandable with things like video surveillance) Many people simply enjoy running their own services and having full control over them. Many are into FOSS and dislike proprietary solutions. Some just want to save money.
