Unfortunately to get the bookmarks in the toolbar you'd have to modify the source and build it yourself as the other commenter noted. Fortunately that work has already been done and is available as a patch in the contrib repo here. That patch puts them on the right though so you might have to make further changes if you really want that on the left. screenshot
