If you like systems-y stuff, Rust is delightful, and offers plenty of opportunities to dig deep. My advice if you want to understand systems programming, but the O'Reilly Rust book, buy/read online the Rust PL, and go implement a Unix utility in Rust. Or implement a feature for one. See: uutils.
Block box tweaks is not what I meant. Have a look at Instructure Canvas (the Learning Management System) as an example of what I did mean.
