Have you considered running something like OpenSnitch to monitor incoming AND outgoing network connections? I have been running it for a few months now and I am impressed with how well it works. I was concerned that it would be one of those projects that sounded great but got abandoned shortly after a proof of concept was finished, but they seem to have it working perfectly.
