I saw this awesome plugin for creating markdown previews in vim. However, the plugin doesn't let you follow links (a la vimwiki) and so becomes quite tedious to use. However, the plugin does let you create math equations and flow charts, so it is quite useful in that regard.
Try wiki.vim as a nearly drop-in replacement for Vimwiki.
On its own it does very little -- not much else besides making the links work. I use the author's wiki-ft.vim alongside vim-table-mode to accomplish more or less what Vimwiki used to. Wiki.vim is far more supportive of other filetype plugins than vimwiki is.
